INTACS are FDA-approved, clear corneal rings that provide an alternative
to laser vision correction for patients with mild myopia (nearsightedness).
The rings, which usually are not noticed by anyone looking at a person
who has them, are made of special biocompatible plastic that has been
safely used in contact lenses and cataract surgery for nearly 50 years.
The rings provide rapid visual improvement and can be removed or changed
should your refractive error change with age.
In a nearsighted eye, the curve of the cornea is too steep, and the
light that enters the eye is focused too far in front of the retina.
The INTACS rings reshape the cornea so light is focused properly
on the retina. Two half-circle rings are usually used in each eye. The
rings gently shape the cornea to correct your vision by adding height
to the outer edge. The result is a change in the curvature of the cornea.
